Republic of Guinea: Statement by High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell following the presidential election of 18 October 2020

27.10.2020

The European Union takes note of the announcement of the provisional results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of Guinea. Although voting was carried out peacefully, questions remain as to the credibility of the result, particularly as regards reporting and the final counting of votes. These questions should be answered as part of an inclusive dialogue and the continuation of the validation process provided for by law.

The EU supports the preventive diplomacy efforts made by ECOWAS, the African Union and the United Nations with a view to restoring trust. To this end, all the actors involved in this process must be able to fully enjoy their freedom of movement and expression. It is also important that means of communication, in particular access to the internet, are guaranteed in all circumstances.

Finally, the EU condemns once again the violence that has caused the death of many people, no matter who the perpetrators were. It urges the authorities to carry out independent investigations so that justice is delivered as soon as possible.
