Context:

  • World Oceans Day is an international day that takes place annually on June 8.
  • The ocean represents over 90% of the planet’s living space.
  • The ocean is key to our economy with an estimated 40 million people employed by ocean-based industries by 2030.
  • The ocean produces at least 50% of the world’s oxygen.
  • Today, 60% of the world’s major marine ecosystems that contribute to livelihoods are deteriorated or used unsustainably.

What you should know:

  • The European Union and the Indian Ocean Commission have worked together for 33 years now towards the sustainable management of the region's marine resources. Over time, this cooperation has been expanded to include Regional Economic Communities (SADC, COMESA, IGAD, EAC).
  • These regional partners, in collaboration with ECOFISH Programme, plan to mark the World Oceans Day through a webinar. This event will highlight the challenges and opportunities related to the oceans.
  • Following the various discussions, stakeholders will be called upon to make simple but immediate commitments to protect our oceans.
