The 19th Eastern Partnership Platform 1 on "Strengthening Institutions and Good Governance" took place in Brussels, gathering policy makers from EU Member States, the 6 Eastern Partnership Partner countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Republic of Moldova and Ukraine) and EU services, as well as representatives from the Council of Europe, the United Nations, and civil society organisations.
Discussions focused on gender issues, particularly on the judicial response to gender-based violence. Keynote speeches by Director-General Christian Danielsson (NEAR), Director-General Tiina Astola (JUST) and EEAS Principal Advisor for Gender issues Mara Marinaki gave an overview of the topic and its stakes in the context of the Eastern Partnership. In the three thematic sessions, participants addressed the challenges related to the adoption of domestic violence legislation and its effective implementation; the effective referral mechanisms; and violence prevention programmes for perpetrators.
This event was held in the framework of the Eastern Partnership Agenda "20 Deliverables for 2020", where gender aspects are a horizontal deliverable. It highlighted the importance of governance and rule of law in addressing gender issues.
