The new edition of the CSDP handbook has arrived in Brussels at the ESDC. 3,760 kg of knowledge about the Common Security and Defence Policy were shipped from the Austrian Armed Forces Printing Centre to the ESDC Secretariat, and on 10 May, the handbooks were unloaded and stored in the headquarters of the College. Five ESDC staff each had to carry on average 715 kg to the second floor of the building, which was a good team-building exercise.

The third edition of the handbook comprises 36 articles by 35 authors from EU Member States, EU institutions and academia. The High Representative, Ms Federica Mogherini, contributed a foreword to this edition. The contents include most of the topics of a standard CSDP orientation course (history, structures, procedures), but also deals with emerging security questions such as hybrid threats, cyber security, migration and terrorism.

The Handbook on CSDP was produced by Austria and Cyprus, edited by Jochen Rehrl and published by the Austrian Ministry of Defence and Sports. The training material is a voluntary contribution from both countries to the ESDC in support of numerous training activities.

During the Foreign Affairs Council (Defence) on 18 May 2017, the handbook will be launched by the ministers of Cyprus and Austria. In the following days, the new ESDC publication will be distributed both in electronic form and as a hardback. 'This handbook is an exemplary means of transferring knowledge, sharing best practices and stimulating discussions on CSDP-related subjects', concluded Mr Hans-Peter Doskozil, the Austrian Defence Minister.
