The Economic Growth Through Sustainable Access to Renewable Energy project aims to build a social enterprise that will provide, promote and distribute renewable energy solutions to rural communities and smallholder farmers in five of Lesotho's districts, namely, Leribe, Berea, Maseru, Mafeteng, and Mohale's Hoek.
The overall objective of the project is to contribute to the socio-economic development of rural households in Lesotho through access to energy efficient and renewable energy services and technologies (EERE). A sustainable social enterprise will be established to distribute the EERE technology to rural populations to meet their different needs. The project also aims to establish a sustainable distribution chain from the builder to the final beneficiary in Lesotho's rural areas.
A secondary goal of the project is to develop the revenues of 40 independent distributors. A third goal is to sensitize 10,000 community members on the negative impact of the use of biomass fuels in their homes and to encourage the use of solar lamps.
