Statement by High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini on the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace

The fifth African Union - European Union (AU-EU) summit will take place on 29-30 November 2017 in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. 2017 is a defining year for EU-Africa relations, as it has been ten years since the adoption of the joint Africa-EU Strategy.

On November 29-30, African and European Heads of State will meet in Abidjan for the 5th AU-EU Summit to discuss the priorities for the partnership between the two continents for the years to come. The overarching theme will be “Investing in Youth” and ensuring an active and meaningful inclusion of young people in the run-up and at the Summit is a given.

10 years ago, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), which established a framework for the rights, dignity and well-being of indigenous peoples.

On the occasion of the World Day Against Child Labour (12 June), Federica Mogherini, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission, Neven Mimica, Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Christos Stylianides, Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, Dimitris Avramopoulos, Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship; Vera Jourova, Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality, and Marianne Thyssen, Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Labour Mobility made the following statement:

The European Union and the African Union reaffirm their strong commitment to full implementation of the Paris agreement, and call on all partners to keep up the momentum created in 2015.

High Representative Federica Mogherini and the European Commission today presented a revitalised framework for joint action to build a stronger strategic partnership between Europe and Africa for more prosperity and stability in the two continents.
