High Representative/Vice-President Josep Borrell met with the Acting Foreign Minister of Albania Gent Cakaj

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell, met today with the acting Foreign Minister of Albania, Gent Cakaj, on the margins of the 26th OSCE Ministerial Council in Bratislava.

 

The High Representative expressed his condolences for the victims of last week's earthquake and their families and reiterated the European Union's resolve to help Albania with its emergency and reconstruction needs.

 

The High Representative and the acting Foreign Minister discussed the ongoing domestic reforms in Albania. The High Representative underlined his unequivocal support for the European perspective of the Western Balkans and the importance of a credible enlargement policy. In this respect, both underlined the importance of the EU-Western Balkans summit in Zagreb.

 

They also discussed broader regional challenges.

 

The High Representative looked forward to Albania’s OSCE chairmanship in 2020 and stressed the importance to use this opportunity to take forward OSCE principles and commitments.

 

High Representative/Vice-President Borrell agreed to remain in close contact with Albania on all the issues they discussed.
