Asia matters – for Europe. And Europe matters – for Asia. It is with this simple premise in mind that the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) was created in 1996
The EU hosted the ASEM Senior Officials' Meeting on 22-23 June in Brussels, which was preceded by the 1st ever meeting of the ASEM Pathfinder Group on Connectivity. Both meetings were chaired by Gunnar Wiegand, Managing Director Asia and Pacific.
The 11th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit took place in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 July, 2016, under the theme "20 Years of ASEM: Partnership for the Future through Connectivity".

Apart from the biennial Summits, the ASEM process features ministerial, senior official meetings and other events in an increasing number of fields, reflecting the expanding opportunities of dialogue and cooperation between the two regions.
During the 2nd Pathfinder Group on Connectivity (APGC) on 6 September 2017 in Myanmar, the 53 ASEM partners will be discussing the definition of Connectivity in the context of ASEM. During the first meeting in Brussels on 21 June 2017, chaired by ASIAPAC MD Gunnar Wiegand, the ASEM SOM leaders have already started to agree on common elements on connectivity.
