The development and publication of the Judicial Department Strategic Plan 2019-2023 was undertaken by the Judicial Department of Fiji, with support from the Fiji Access to Justice Project, which is funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

The Fiji Access to Justice Project supports access to justice for impoverished and vulnerable groups by empowering people to access their legal rights and services, and strengthening key justice institutions to deliver improved services.

The launch was presided by the Honourable Acting Chief Justice Mr. Kamal Kumar, and attended by senior representatives of the Courts, Government officials, legal practitioners, representatives of the international diplomatic corps and members of civil society organisations.

The Judicial Department aims to improve access to justice to rural and remote areas. One of the key initiatives of the transformation of the judicial system is to improve access to justice, having regard to persons who have limited means. We are well on track and will continue to remain so as we embark on this Strategic Plan,” said the Honourable Acting Chief Justice.

Also speaking at the launch, the Head of Cooperation at the Delegation of the EU for the Pacific Mr. Christoph Wagner said, “The EU is proud to help facilitating better access to justice for all citizens particularly for poor and vulnerable citizens. One way in which we do this is by supporting increased capacity of Fiji’s justice institutions. We are pleased to be part of the launch of the Strategic Plan, which demonstrates the commitment of the Judicial Department of Fiji to further improve and become more accessible, efficient and transparent.”

Honourable Chief Registrar Mr. Yohan Liyanage said, “The Strategic Plan is a milestone in the transformation of the Judicial Department given the many achievable targets. We commend everyone who committed their time and effort to participate in the interactive activities to ensure that the Strategic Plan was finalized.”

Mr. Liyanage appreciated the timely funding provided by the EU and the technical assistance provided by UNDP which made possible the collaborative multi-stakeholder and multi-phase process towards the completion of the Strategic Plan.

UNDP Pacific Office in Fiji Resident Representative a.i. Mr Vineet Bhatia said “UNDP has been a strong partner for providing support to improving access to justice in Fiji founded on its substantive experience and positive impact in the field globally. Through the Fiji Access to Justice Project, UNDP supports national partners to expand access to justice, especially for women, youth, persons with disabilities, marginalized groups, and remote or displaced communities”.

The Judicial Department Strategic Plan will be available electronically to the public on the Judicial Department of Fiji website. In addition, printed copies will be available at the Judicial Department offices located in the major cities and towns across Fiji.
