EU Delegation Visits ZRBF2 Resilience Initiatives in the Mid-Zambezi Valley

The EU Delegation visited ZRBF2 resilience projects in the Mid-Zambezi Valley, witnessing how communities are building stronger, climate-resilient livelihoods through innovative, landscape-wide solutions. From fisheries and forest restoration to nature-based enterprises, real progress is taking root.

Over the past days, the EU Delegation to Zimbabwe visited ZRBF2 resilience initiatives across Mbire, Hurungwe and Kariba districts, at the heart of the Mid-Zambezi Valley landscape. Together with our partners, we saw firsthand how local communities are strengthening their livelihoods through a range of innovative actions—from village business units and non-timber forest product (NTFP) agri-processing hubs, to floating fish cages, cold-chain facilities, forest restoration nurseries, apiculture and mushroom-growing enterprises.

These investments reflect the landscape approach that guides our cooperation. Rather than supporting isolated activities, the EU and Team Europe work alongside communities, authorities and NGOs to build resilience across entire socio-ecological systems. By linking climate-smart agriculture, fisheries, forest restoration and nature-based businesses, we aim to create sustainable livelihood opportunities that endure.

The mission comes at a significant moment, with new EU grants on agribusiness and natural resource management soon to be signed. These upcoming programmes will reinforce and scale up the resilience pathways initiated under ZRBF2, further strengthening value-chain development, natural resource management, ecosystem restoration and local economies in Zimbabwe’s priority landscapes.

What we witnessed on the ground confirms that investing in people, landscapes and strong partnerships delivers real results. Collaboration between communities, the Government of Zimbabwe and local authorities, UNDP, FAO, Danish Church Aid (DCA), Bio-Innovation Zimbabwe (BIZ), Fambidzanai Permaculture Centre (FPC), MyTrees, Matusadona Conservation Trust (MCT), Wildlife Conservation Action (WCA) and other actors continues to drive progress toward climate-resilient rural livelihoods.
