On Thursday 8 October, 2019, Jacek Jankowski, Ambassador of the European Union to Zambia presented his Letters of Credence to H.E. Ms Chileshe Kapwepwe, Secretary General of COMESA.

The EU is a long-standing partner and friend of COMESA. Both organisations follow regional integration paths – political and socio-economic development agendas that generate tangible and sustainable benefits for the life of citizens. Ambassador Jankowski underlined that: “COMESA is one of the significant driving forces of the African continental integration project - embedded in the African Union Agenda 2063 - that the EU strongly supports.

Sustainable socio-economic integration and fair trade are essential elements of this project”. “The EU remains COMESA's biggest trading and economic partner. The Africa-Europe Alliance for Sustainable Investment and Jobs announced by the European Commission President, Jean-Claude Juncker last year, offers new opportunities to support COMESA’s integration agenda – private sector, trade, industrialization and quality job creation. In parallel, it makes available innovative financial instruments to investors as well as offers skills development initiatives for the youth.” – said Ambassador Jankowski.

COMESA Secretary General, Ms Chileshe Kapwepwe responded to Ambassador Jankowski's address by stating that " the European Union has consistently supported COMESA's integration programmes over the years. Indeed, the European Union has been, and continues to be, a very important Development Partner to COMESA as the largest founder and for that we remain grateful. Under the current 11th EDF Regional Indicative Programme (RIP) the EU assists COMESA to implement regional integration priorities with an allocation of EUR85 million."

Check against delivery!

Your Excellency, the COMESA Secretary General, Ms Chileshe Kapwepwe.  Ladies and Gentlemen.

It is my great honour to present Letters of Credence as the new EU Representative to COMESA. I wish to convey the greetings of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and the Vice-President of the European Commission, H.E. Ms Federica Mogherini, to You, Your Excellency, and Your Organisation as well as to the COMESA Member States and all their citizens.

The EU is a long-standing partner and friend of COMESA. Both our organisations follow regional integration paths – political and socio-economic development agendas that generate tangible and sustainable benefits for the life of our citizens.

We are truly convinced that peace and prosperity go hand in hand, and they can only be further strengthened through effective multilateralism and more advanced integration efforts.

While recognising political and institutional differences in our integration models, the EU is very committed to continue to share its integration experience and to actively support COMESA in delivering on its goals.

COMESA is one of the significant driving forces of the African continental integration project that the EU strongly supports. It is embedded in the African Union Agenda 2063: the continent’s strategic framework to transform Africa into the global powerhouse.

Successful socio-economic integration and fair trade are important elements of this project. All Member States of COMESA have signed the African Continental Free Trade Agreement. COMESA – with its reach experience and trade between 21 Member States that has reached already over 8 billion USD - has certainly a fundamental role to play as one of the important building blocks of the future continental architecture.

Your Excellency, last year saw the announcement of the Africa-Europe Alliance for Sustainable Investment and Jobs by the European Commission President, H.E. Mr Jean-Claude Juncker.

Considering that the EU remains COMESA's biggest trading and economic partner, the Alliance brings new opportunities to support your integration agenda – private sector, trade, industrialization and quality job creation. In parallel, it makes available innovative financial instruments to investors as well as offers skills development initiatives for the youth.

Your Excellency, I’m looking forward to working closely with you to seize opportunities in coming years to and to further strengthen our long-standing partnership.
