The European Union (EU) has deployed an Electoral Follow-up Mission (EFM) to the Republic of Zambia. The EFM is led by Mrs. Cecile Kyenge, Member of the European Parliament, and is supported by two electoral experts and two EU officials.
Mrs Kyenge served as the Chief Observer of the EU Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) to Zambia in 2016, which was established following an invitation from the Government of Zambia. The mandate of the EOM was to observe independently all aspects of the electoral process in 2016, to offer an impartial and balanced assessment and to propose detailed recommendations for areas of improvement based on the Zambian law as well as regional and international standards for elections.
The 2019 EFM to Zambia aims at assessing the implementation of EU EOM recommendations. During her stay in Zambia, which will start on Sunday 9 June 2019, Mrs Kyenge, will meet and exchange with a wide range of national and international stakeholders. Mrs. Kyenge will communicate on the preliminary findings of her consultations at the end of her stay on Friday 14 June 2018. A more comprehensive Final Report will be published in the next few months.
The EU Election Observation and Follow-up Missions operate in accordance with the “Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation” adopted in 2005 at the United Nations.
