Today, the European Union signed a Financing Agreement for the Regional Enterprise Competitiveness and Access to Markets Programme (RECAMP) with COMESA amounting to 10 M EUR.
The programme aims to improve competitiveness and market access of SMEs and other private sector players in selected value chains in the COMESA region.The value chains that will receive support include Horticulture, Leather and Leather products and Agro processing. In his remarks, the EU Ambassador to Zambia and Representative to COMESA, H.E. Alessandro Mariani, highlighted that the selected value chains present the biggest opportunities for job creation and participation of women and youth-led SMEs through development of strong partnerships with large corporations in the upstream of the value chains.
In her statement, COMESA Secretary General Ms. Chileshe Kapwepwe expressed her gratitude to the EU for the continued support to regional economic integration efforts in COMESA. She said that the programme is consistent with COMESA's integration agenda and will contribute to achieve the objectives of the New Africa-Europe Alliance for Sustainable Investment and Jobs. She indicated that the programme will address supply side constraints that cause low competitiveness and productivity of industries in the COMESA region.
