Iran: High Representative Josep Borrell met with Foreign Minister Javad Zarif in the margins of the Antalya Diplomatic Forum

High Representative Josep Borrell met with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif today, Friday 18 June, in the margins of the Antalya Diplomatic Forum.

They discussed the way forward on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) - the Iran Nuclear deal - and underlined their continued and full commitment to the ongoing negotiations in Vienna.

The High Representative, as Coordinator of the JCPOA, welcomed the progress made over the last weeks of discussions in view of a possible return of the United States to the JCPOA, and on how to ensure its full and effective implementation by all. The Vienna talks allowed to further define the important and difficult decisions that still have to be addressed. The High Representative underlined the importance of seizing the political opportunity and recalled the need for all to be flexible, in order to reach a compromise that will be in the interest of all.

In view of the Iranian Presidential elections happening today, the High Representative called for continued commitment by Iran to the JCPOA.

The High Representative and Minister Zarif also discussed the situation in Afghanistan, in view of the upcoming withdrawal of international forces from the country and the international community’s engagement and commitment to ensure stability in the region.
