Parliament calls on the Vietnamese authorities to immediately and unconditionally release human rights defenders and journalists Pham Chi Dung, Nguyen Tuong Thuy and Le Huu Minh Tuan, as well as all others detained and sentenced in the country for merely exercising their right to freedom of expression, and to drop all charges against them.

MEPs are appalled by and condemn the intensifying crackdown on dissent and the increasing violations of human rights in Vietnam.

Mr President, Honourable Members of the European Parliament,

I welcome the five main lines included in this substantive, timely and forward-looking report.

15/01/2021 – HR/VP Blog – For more than two months, conflict has been raging in the Tigray region in Ethiopia. The situation is desperate for the local population and the conflict is unsettling dynamics both within Ethiopia and the whole region. I have passed a clear message to the Ethiopian leadership: we are ready to help, but unless there is access for humanitarian aid operators, the EU cannot disburse the planned budget support to the Ethiopian government.

The Delegation of the European Union to Vietnam is concerned with the decision of the court of appeal in Ho Chi Minh City to uphold the heavy sentences handed down to Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Hanh, Mr. Ngo Van Dung, Mr. Le Quy Loc and Mr. Ho Dinh Cuong of the Hiến Pháp (Constitution) Group, a group of activists aiming to peacefully promote the human rights guaranteed in Vietnam’s constitution.

10/01/2021 – HR/VP blog – The shocking events in Washington last Wednesday must be a wake-up call for all democracy advocates around the world. We need to fight harder against disinformation and inequalities and renew global cooperation to promote the rule of law and democratic values.

The sentencing of Mr Pham Chi Dung to 15 years in prison, and 11 years each for Mr Nguyen Tuong Thuy and Mr Le Huu Minh Tuan, is a negative development. All three are members of the Independent Journalists’ Association of Vietnam (IJAVN), a civil society organisation which promotes free speech, press freedom and freedom of association. States must protect freedom of expression and create a favourable environment for public debate even when the opinions expressed are contrary to those held by the authorities.

03/01/2021 – HR/VP blog – In 2021, we want to give fresh impetus to the partnership between the European Union and Africa. However, this partnership should not be limited to economic and political issues – culture and cultural exchanges should become a key part of it.

28/12/2020 – HR/VP blog – Especially during the Covid-19 “infodemic”, we have seen how widespread and how damaging foreign interference and disinformation can be for our security, our democracy and our societies. Addressing disinformation is an urgent necessity.
