With the launching of two short range ballistic missiles today, a fifth such test in recent weeks, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) continues to undermine international work for building trust and establishing lasting peace and security on the Korean Peninsula, free of nuclear weapons.

We expect the DPRK to refrain from any further provocations, abide by its stated commitments, and fully implement its international obligations as determined by multiple United Nations Security Council Resolutions. It is crucial that the DPRK takes concrete and credible steps towards the abandoning of its nuclear, weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programmes in a complete, verifiable and irreversible manner.

The EU is strongly convinced that the diplomatic process must be continued and developed. We expect the DPRK to quickly reengage in working-level talks with the United States, as agreed at the meeting in the demilitarised zone (DMZ) on 30 June, and create favourable conditions for meaningful and sustainable negotiations.
