Vietnamese cinema lovers of all ages are again offered a unique chance to enjoy the best European films during the European Film Festival 2017 (EFF2017). The festival, featuring 15 contemporary films drawn from 15 countries of the European Union, will be opened in Ho Chi Minh city on 13 May and in Hanoi on 15 May 2017. Wishing to reach out to a wider range of audiences in Vietnam, this year, for the first time ever, the Festival is also organized in the central city of Hue from 14 to 25 May.
This annual cultural event is jointly organized by the Delegation of the European Union to Vietnam, Embassies of the EU Member States and the European Cultural Institutes, showcasing Europe's rich cinema heritage, diversified culture and contemporary creativity.
In this 18th edition of the Festival, the selected films mainly focus on the theme of "tolerance and respect" which is a new feature of this annual event. Through these films spectators enter into the world of different emotional states of every European. It is a collection of passion, joy, fear and frustration, loneliness and sorrow, misunderstanding, surprise, tolerance and compassion, respect and love. Especially in this edition of the Festival, most of the films have been selected in several national and international festivals and have won highly- acclaimed awards all over the world. Through a collection of drama, sports, biography and children movies targeting different groups of audiences the Festival is expected to offer Vietnamese movie lovers delightful and interesting experience.
“Mutual tolerance and respect are key for happy societies. They are central values in European culture and are the main theme during this year's European Film Festival. We hope our Vietnamese friends will appreciate the beauty of mutual tolerance and respect as displayed in our films, and as they are also key in Vietnamese society," said Head of the EU Delegation to Vietnam, Ambassador Bruno Angelet.
Found in 2000, the European Film Festival has become a prominent and anticipated cultural event Vietnam. It has established itself as a credible avenue to bring new and captivating aspects of European culture to the attraction of Vietnamese people, by showcasing films that would otherwise not be shown in Vietnamese commercial cinemas.
This cinematic event is part of a broader series of “Europe Days 2017” events clustered around Europe Day (9 May), a cycle which since its inception in 2004 has gained a high profile in the cultural life of Vietnamese people.
The European Film Festival 2017 will take place at:
Hanoi: National Cinema Centre, 87 Lang Ha Str.,
Hue city: Dong Ba Cinema, 187 Tran Hung Dao Str.,
Ho Chi Minh city: CineStar Cinema, 271 Nguyen Trai Str., District 1
In Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city most of the films will be screened in two sessions. In Hue, each film will be screened once. All films will be screened in their original languages with English and Vietnamese subtitles.
Free-of-charge tickets can be collected from 10 May 2017 at the distribution locations (details of distribution timing of each location can be found in the website of the festival).
