EU priorities at the United Nations and the 75th United Nations General Assembly adopted

18.09.2020

13 July 2020, Brussels - The Council today adopted conclusions setting out the EU's priorities at the 75th General Assembly of the United Nations (September 2020 – September 2021), under the theme "Championing multilateralism and a strong and effective UN that delivers for all".

In its conclusions, the Council stresses that, as demonstrated by the outbreak of COVID-19, multilateral cooperation is more necessary than ever. Therefore, the rules-based international order – with the UN at its core – must be upheld and international solidarity and cooperation strengthened.

For the 75th UNGA, the EU will focus on key priorities such as human rights and gender equality, promoting peace and security, building a fair globalisation, accelerating the global transition towards sustainable and climate-neutral future, and leading the transition to a new digital world. Preserving the humanitarian space and ensuring respect for international humanitarian law and humanitarian principles will remain equally important for the EU.

The conclusions affirm that the EU will continue to support the UN as an indispensable forum for multilateral solutions to global challenges, and will continue to demonstrate global leadership, with a view to promoting a safer and better world for all.
