Are you a young graduate interested in international relations? Are you curious to learn more about work of a diplomatic mission and how the EU Delegation represents EU interests and values in Vienna-based International Organisations?

What we offer?

A traineeship of up to 6 months within the UN Section of the EU Delegation to the International Organisations in Vienna, starting in September 2020, subject to respect to the local legislation as well as the national legislation of the candidate(s) if non-resident.

The UN Section assists the Head of Delegation (HoD) in the performance of his role as Ambassador of the EU towards Vienna-based Organisations (except for the OSCE). This includes preparing the agenda, background papers and speaking points for HoD meetings with EU Heads of Missions, Ambassadors of third countries as well as the leadership of the aforementioned Organisations. The Section covers the dense agenda of Organisations` activities, e.g. by convening and chairing coordination meetings with EU Member States, outreach towards third countries, drafting EU statements and preparing concise, analytical and timely reports for the European External Action Service (EEAS) and the European Commission about events. The UN Section liaises with other Sections on overarching issues and is actively engaged in public diplomacy efforts showcasing tangible results of EU action achieved in partnership with Vienna Organisations.

Main tasks:

  • Assist permanent staff in the preparation of coordination and outreach activities.
  • Help in the drafting of EU statements by reflecting discussions in "tracked changes".
  • Take notes during the above-mentioned Section activities for use in EUDEL reports.
  • Participate in the EUDEL representation in meetings, in general jointly with permanent staff.
  • Engage in research about UN-related background upon request of the HoD or Section members.
  • Assist in the organisation and execution of public diplomacy activities.

Qualifications or special requirements:

  • A master's degree in an area related to the above, e.g. International Politics, European Studies etc.
  • A demonstrated interest in the EU`s external action and international politics, specifically the UN.
  • Experience in the drafting of policy documents, note-taking and drafting of meeting reports.
  • Excellent English language skills.
  • Experience working for a related International Organisation or a diplomatic Mission in that context as well as the ability to work in other UN languages and/or German would be assets.

Important information

Each selected trainee will receive a monthly grant to cover living expenses. All costs related to travel inside the country of residence, visa, insurance, accommodation must be borne by the trainee.

Applications from non-eligible candidates will not be considered. After the evaluation of all applications, shortlisted candidates will be contacted and invited for an interview. Unsuccessful candidates will be notified by email. In case the selected candidate is not able to present the required documents, his/her candidacy will be rejected.
