MEDIA RELEASE

ON THE LAUNCH AND INCEPTION OF THE INTRA-ACP GCCA+ PROGRAMME IN SOUTHERN AFRICA

EU provides €8million to strengthen capacity of SADC Member States

to undertake regional and national adaptation and mitigation actions

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat and the EU will launch an Intra-ACP Global Climate Change Alliance (GCCA+) programme in the SADC region.  The programme intends to strengthen capacity of SADC Member States to undertake regional and national adaptation and mitigation actions in response to the challenges caused by the effects of global climate change and climate variability.  The official launch of the programme will be held in Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa at Birchwood Hotel on the 6th November, 2019 at 0830hours.

The overall objective of the project is to increase the capabilities of SADC Member States to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change, in support of the achievement of the Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP), Africa Agenda 2063 and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); and to have their voice better heard in the international climate change negotiations.

The Global Climate Change Alliance Plus (GCCA+) is a European Union flagship initiative which is helping the world's most vulnerable countries to address climate change. This EU initiative helps mainly countries to increase their resilience to climate change and also supports in implementing their commitments resulting from the 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change (COP 21), the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the new European Consensus on Development.

The launch will be attended by Senior Officials representing SADC Members States, Private Organisations, European Union and ACP Secretariat and other International Partners.
