The sides discussed a wide range of issues related to EU-Kazakhstan cooperation on the basis of the Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement and in the light of the new EU Strategy on Central Asia. Topics included political and economic reforms, rule of law, trade and economic relations and issues of the international agenda. EUSR Burian also conveyed a message from High Representative/Vice President Federica Mogherini, congratulating the President on his recent election and reiterating EU's interest in continuing strengthening cooperation with Kazakhstan both regionally and bilaterally.
"The EU looks forward to working closely with President Tokayev and to continue strengthening our relations. The EU is very supportive of Kazakhstan's reforms and modernisation processes and appreciates its commitment to regional cooperation and international engagement, including with Syria, Iran and Afghanistan. We are certain that Kazakhstan will continue to play an important role in regional cooperation with the aim to ensure peace, stability and security", noted Mr Peter Burian.
The sides also underlined the importance of increasing Europe-Asia connectivity, which should bring benefits to Central Asia and develop in a sustainable, open and non-exclusive way that creates a level-playing field for all stakeholders.
The EU is Kazakhstan’s first trade partner representing around 50% of its external trade and over half of total foreign direct investment in Kazakhstan. The Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (EPCA) between the EU and Kazakhstan was signed on 21 December 2015 in Astana. Since 1 May 2016 the provisional implementation of the great majority of articles of the Agreement are in force, notably the trade and business provisions. The Agreement provides significant boost to economic and political ties between the EU and Kazakhstan and also enhance concrete cooperation in 29 key policy areas, including in the sectors of economic and financial cooperation, energy, transport, environment and climate change, employment and social affairs, culture, education and research.
