On June 26, Head of the EU Delegation to Uzbekistan, Ambassador Eduards Stiprais met with the Mayor of Tashkent City, Mr Jakhongir Artykkhodjaev. The main focus of this meeting was to talk about the European Mobility Week (EMW), a global campaign which Tashkent City could join and run a mass public campaign jointly with EUD on September 16-22.

The main objective of the meeting was to start a concrete cooperation with the Tashkent municipality in a major challenge for a city: mobility. It is also to enhance understanding about EU policies and technical and financial cooperation among Uzbekistan citizens, national and local authorities, and civil society organisations through implementation of a comprehensive set of actions to enhance the visibility of the European Union. To ensure that, the following activities are planned in Uzbekistan.

EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK (EMW)

  • The EU's EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK takes place every year from 16-22 September and this is a decentralised campaign that encourages towns and cities to introduce and promote sustainable transport measures.
  • During the campaign, people are invited to try out alternatives to car use. The week culminates in Car-Free Day, where participating towns and cities set aside one or several areas for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport (22 Sep).
  • Last but not least, Road safety is one of EU's key policy priorities. This year, the EU Delegation invites Tashkent City to join project EDWARD – a European Day without a Road Death –during the Mobility Week. The target of project EDWARD is that no one should die on the roads of Tashkent City on 26 September.
  • Given the new trend that is observed in Uzbekistan, a strong promotion of healthy life style and encouragement of people to use alternative ways of movements in the big cities like Tashkent really reflected in the main purpose of the campaign EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK.

The EU Delegation can provide its support to make this event successful and with "a multiplier effect" that can expand to other large cities of Uzbekistan, like Samarkand, Bukhara, Fergana and others by using a model of Tashkent city.

B) 7th European Film Festival (EFF) – October 2019

  • This year, the EU Delegation is planning to expand the EFF and have it in the capital city and 5 regions of Uzbekistan. It is expected that 7th EUFF will be launched in Tashkent in October 2019 and few days later in all six regions with more than 30 films shown in parallel during 7 days.

C) Roundtable Meeting to mark 25 years anniversary of establishing cooperation between the EU and Uzbekistan, 15 November 2019
