Awarding ceremony of the 14th national award "Oltin Kalam"

On 3 May, the awarding ceremony of the 14th National Award "Oltin Kalam" ("Golden Pencil") was held, for which the EU Delegation to Uzbekistan announced two nominations. The Head of the Delegation congratulated the winners of these nominations and handed over the certificates and gifts to the winners. The winners will take part in the press tour to Brussels together with the other journalists from five countries of Central Asia.

On 3 May, in honor of the World Press Freedom Day, a solemn event was held in the Turkiston Palace to congratulate the winners and prize-winners of the International Competition established by the initiative of the President of Uzbekistan for the XIV National Award "Oltin Qalam" ("Golden Pencil"). This year, 518 journalists with about 6,700 creative works took part in the competition.

The EU delegation to Uzbekistan took part in the competition with two nominations. In the framework of these nominations won:

1. Alisher Umirdinov ( "For the best article on the development of foreign trade policy of Uzbekistan."

2. Dilafruz Kulmatova (UzReport)- "For the best video conversation, which highlights the cooperation between the European Union and Uzbekistan"


The Head of the EU Delegation to Uzbekistan, Ambassador Eduards Stiprais took part in the ceremony and handed over the certificates and gifts to the winners.

On 16-20 June , a press tour to Brussels (Belgium) will be organized for 15 journalists from five countries of Central Asia (Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan) to raise awareness of the media about relations between the EU and Central Asia. The visit will be organized within the framework of the European Development Days, which are held annually in Brussels. During the trip, journalists will be familiarized with EU institutions, including the press services of the European Commission and the Council. Journalists will receive information on the key findings of the European Council regarding the new EU-Central Asia Strategy, which will be adopted on June 17, 2019.

Background information

The "Golden Pencil" contest is held by the Creative Union of Journalists of Uzbekistan and the Journalists Retraining Center, with the support of the National Association of Electronic Media, the Public Fund for Support and Development of Independent Print Media and News Agencies, the National Television and Radio Company, the Ministry of Culture, the Council of the Federation of Trade Unions of Uzbekistan and the Uzreport news agency which are an important factor in the wide popularization of the best achievements of journalism, the manifestation of high civic position Media, formation of critical thinking, as well as new approaches to the creative activity of journalists. Over the past years, almost 6,500 journalists took part in this most prestigious national media competition, presenting about 100,000 creative materials. In the competitions held so far - 280 journalists won the award.
