Federica Mogherini welcomes announcement of members of new Libyan unity government

High Representative Federica Mogherini today welcomed the announcement of the agreement on the Ministerial posts in the Government of National Accord by the Libyan Presidency Council as “an important decision. This result, under the leadership of designated Prime Minister Serraj, is an essential step in the implementation of the Libya Political Agreement”.

“It is now for the House of Representatives and its Presidency to show the same spirit of compromise and sense of leadership, and promptly convene to endorse the proposed Cabinet, as established in the Political Agreement,” she added.

Mogherini described Libya as being at a critical juncture and said it was crucial that all key political and security actors uphold the interests of their country and its people above all others. “Only a united Libyan government, supported by all its citizens, will be able to end political divisions, defeat terrorism, and address the numerous security, humanitarian and economic challenges the country faces.”

The EU, as re-confirmed on Monday by EU Foreign Ministers, stands ready to support the GNA once in place to accompany the Libyan people in their search for peace and stability.
