Europe Day 2025
The Europe Day 2025 celebration was a special occasion held in a venue full of symbolism, as it took place in the very room where the historic negotiations for the EU-Mercosur agreement were concluded in 2024.
During the event, the values of peace, unity, and cooperation that inspire the European project were highlighted.
The celebration was attended by the Vice President of the Republic, ministers, senators, members of parliament, and other senior government officials, ambassadors from EU Member States and other members of the diplomatic corps, social organizations, business leaders, and other members of civil society.
In his speech, the European Union Ambassador to Uruguay, Paolo Berizzi, emphasized that “Europe and Uruguay share fundamental values such as democracy, human rights, and a commitment to sustainable development.” He also stressed the importance of strengthening ties between the two regions in the current global context.
Europe Day is celebrated every May 9 to honor peace and unity on the continent. The date marks the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, a historic proposal presented in 1950 by Robert Schuman, the French Foreign Minister, which laid the foundations for European cooperation. Schuman’s proposal is considered the starting point of what is now the European Union.
In 2025, Europe Day is a particularly special occasion, as we celebrate seventy-five years since the Schuman Declaration. Discover the story behind his visionary ideas and how they have helped shape the EU as we know it today.
