Equality between men and women is one of the objectives of the European Union. Through the Women's Charter and the Strategic Commitment for Gender Equality 2016-2019, the European Union seeks to promote equality between men and women in Europe and throughout the world. Under these guidelines, the EU Delegation to Uruguay has planned three panels on gender during this year, which aim to: strengthen political participation, economic and social empowerment, and fight against gender violence.
The second of these panels, titled "Economic and Social Empowerment of Women", took place on 14 June at EU Delegation premises. With the understanding that economic empowerment contributes to gender equality, poverty eradication and inclusive economic growth, and that social empowerment enhances women's advocacy skills and capabilities, the panel provided a space for dialogue and a frank and productive exchange of experiences.
The Head of the EU Delegation to Uruguay, Ambassador Juan Fernández Trigo, opened the event. Ernesto Murro, Minister of Labor and Social Security, Magdalena Furtado, Coordinator of UN Women in Uruguay, Veronica Raffo, Partner of the Ferrere Study (and former President of the Uruguayan Organisation of Women Etrepreneurs) and Virginia Suarez, General Manager of HSBC, were on the panel. Mónica Bottero, Director of Galería magazine, moderated the panel.
