On the occasion of the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, we pay tribute to the essential role of cultural diversity in Europe and around the world for fostering dialogue, respect, and contributing to sustainable development and growth. Europe is a continent of cultural diversity. Our societies, institutions and laws are the outcome of centuries of exchanges of ideas, values, traditions and memories.

Overview of the human rights and democracy situation: In 2018, the main human rights related  issues  in  the  US  included  the  death  penalty,  the  use  of  the  detention  facility  in  Guantanamo, the protection of the rights of migrants and refugees, freedom of the press, as well  as  women's  rights  and  LGBTI  rights.  The  US  continued  its  disengagement  from  human  rights multilateral fora.

On the occasion of the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, the European Union reiterates its unswerving commitment to promoting and protecting the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) persons.
