The Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Korea hosts the Model European Union 2020 on October 30th at HUFS
The Delegation of the European Union (EU) to the Republic of Korea (ROK) is hosting the Model European Union (MEU) 2020 simulation of the Council of the European Union. The event is also co-hosted by the three Jean Monnet EU Centres of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS), Yonsei University and of Korea University.
The MEU2020 will take place on Friday, 30th October 2020, at the HUFS, as a full day event.
Some key points to consider:
The Model EU simulation this year is taking place with the participation of 39 students from 16 universities across South Korea who demonstrated a great interest in learning more about global issues, primarily the role and contribution of the EU in addressing an important subject of European and international interests such as climate change.
The simulation of the Council of the European Union will take place with these talented students playing the roles of two EU Commission representatives, Secretariat of the Council of the EU representatives, national ministers for environment and climate change of the 27 Member States of the EU, 8 journalists and more interested parties. The presidency of the Council rotates among the EU member states every 6 months, and the German presidency of the Council of the EU, which extends from 1 July to 31 December 2020, will be represented by Gaeun Park (Korea University)[1].
In the context of MEU2020, a pressure group panel is being represented by high school students selected to advocate their interests with the objective of trying to impact the opinions of policy makers. The winning high school team from Seoul Myungduk Girls' High School (1st grade students Taeseong Kim, Wooyeon Kim, Jiwon Kim, Siheon Bae, Hawon Shim, and supervisor Mr. Jong-won Choi) will be showing their project at MEU2020 to influence the conclusions of the Council of the EU. The team was recognized for the simple and accessible manner in which they presented the current EU actions to fight climate change, and the originality of their idea to enhance EU-Korea cooperation against climate change and the overall quality of their video submission.
In this year’s MEU2020, students nominated to assume the role of members of the press corps have the function during the simulation to cover the activities of the simulation and report on them through the production of simulated articles. This includes attending simulated meetings, interviewing participants, and participating in press briefings and conferences to report on the policies and positions of Member States and the Council of the EU.
The Delegation of the EU to the RoK will be part of the voting jury in charge of selecting the three best performing students and sponsor their participation in a European University’s summer school for two weeks. Meanwhile, three students will be selected by each of the Jean Monnet Centres of Korea University, Yonsei University and HUFS, with Special Mention. All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation signed by the Ambassador of the EU to the RoK.
Due to Covid-19 precautions, the MEU 2020 will be held virtually for audiences while participants will gather at Obama Hall in HUFS to convene the Council of the European Union simulation. Audiences can view the full day event live at the following link.
