After a de facto moratorium of 16 years, the US Department of Justice yesterday announced that the Federal Government will resume capital punishment. This decision contradicts the growing trend to abolish the death penalty both in the United States and in the world. The death penalty violates the inalienable right to life enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and is a cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment.
The European Union strongly opposes the death penalty and will continue to work for its abolition worldwide.
