Ambassador Stavros Lambrinidis presented his credentials to U.S. President Donald Trump at a White House ceremony yesterday, formally assuming the role of European Union Ambassador to the United States.

In his accompanying note to President Trump, Ambassador Lambrinidis stressed the fundamental importance of the EU's relationship to the U.S. "There is no deeper and stronger alliance than the transatlantic partnership," he wrote.

He noted that since its inception more than six decades ago, the European Union "has constantly reformed to become today a global actor and a true partner for the United States." And underlined that "our close and enduring friendship has helped solidify our shared interests, values, security and prosperity. A strong and united Europe is a guarantor of US security and prosperity as well."

Ambassador Lambrinidis also stressed that that the EU and U.S. have a $1 trillion bilateral trade relationship, "the largest economic relationship in the world – and we want to expand it further, to the benefit of all American and European citizens. Your July 2018 meeting with European Commission President Juncker highlighted the potential of working together in the spirit of friendship, trust, and a mutual commitment to preserve and strengthen our partnership."

Ambassador Lambrinidis represents the Presidents of the European Commission and the European Council, under the authority of the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

Ambassador Stavros Lambrinidis is a Greek national, who most recently served as the European Union Special Representative for Human Rights. He has previously held the office of Foreign Affairs Minister of Greece, and he was twice elected Member of the European Parliament, in which he also served as Vice-President.

With taking up his position in the United States, Ambassador Lambrinidis is 'returning home' to the city where he started out as a young lawyer, after studies at Amherst College and Yale Law School, where he was also Managing Editor of The Yale Journal of International Law. He is married Phoebe Kapouano and has a daughter, Chloe.
