As part of a 5-day trip to Europe, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo traveled to Brussels on February 15, 2019 to meet with the EU’s foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini. They discussed the need to strengthen EU-U.S. cooperation on a broad range of foreign policy issues, with a particular focus on Venezuela, Syria, Afghanistan, DPRK, Ukraine and the Western Balkans (press release here).
On their way back from Munich to Washington, a congressional delegation led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stopped in Brussels to visit EU institutions and NATO headquarters. The delegation met with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on February 18 and was then hosted by Federica Mogherini on February 19.
Mogherini and Pelosi “stressed the need to continue to promote the partnership and the friendship that exist between Europe and the United States […] and confirmed the importance of safeguarding multilateralism and the international rules based order in promoting democratic values” (press release here).
