Press releases

"EU@SXSW" set to bring more European culture, discovery & discussion to Austin.

The EU returns to South by Southwest to showcase its commitment to innovation in technology, urban development, and policymaking.

After a successful debut appearance in 2017, the European Union Delegation to the United States will reopen its "EU@SXSW" venue at 'Palm Door on 6th' (508 East 6th St) from March 10-12.

Through interactive panel discussions, technology demonstrations, and live music performances accompanied by European food and drink, "EU@SXSW" has established itself as the go-to place for European discovery and discussion. Visitors will hear from leaders and experts on topics such as virtual storytelling, sustainable cities, combating online hate speech, protecting musicians in the digital age, upscaling European animation, anti-trust in the digital economy, and much more. Meanwhile, the venue's outdoor Demo Deck will host demonstrations from startups selected by the European Commission's own 'Innovation Radar,' a new tool focused on finding cutting-edge entrepreneurs whose technology has been developed with the help of EU funding programs.

EU@SXSW will feature a variety of speakers including Representative Will Hurd (R-TX), Julie Brill (Corporate Vice President & Deputy General Counsel for Privacy and Regulatory Affairs, Microsoft), Derek Kan (Under Secretary for Policy, US DOT), Gabriella Gómez-Mont (Director and Founder, Laboratorio Para La Ciudad), Michel Reilhac (VR Director, Venice Biennale), Brittan Heller (Director of Technology and Society, ADL) and the EU Ambassador to the US, David O'Sullivan.

"When we think of South by Southwest, we think of the ultimate gathering of creators and innovators from all over the world," said Ambassador O'Sullivan. "It's a unique opportunity to further show why the EU is an ideal partner of choice for US in tech industries and working toward communal solutions to global issues."

Starting at 1:30 p.m. on March 10, the EU@SXSW venue will be open to South by Southwest Badge holders; non-credentialed participants can attend by registering via Eventbrite. Discounted drinks will be made available for attendees who use #EUatSXSW on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Snapchat – or take a picture in the EU photobooth, at the virtual reality demonstration, or in front of the venue's welcome sign.

Background Information

South by Southwest (SXSW) is the leading conference and festival in the United States devoted to the convergence of music, film, and technology. Given the sustained attendance of digital industry and policy officials, the European Union Delegation to the US identified SXSW as an ideal venue to engage stakeholders and foster closer transatlantic collaboration.

While this will be the European Union's second official presence, EU Member States have long been well represented at SXSW.  Last year, 14 Member States had a presence on the SXSW Interactive Trade show Floor, with the UK, Denmark, France, and The Netherlands each having their own "house" with official programming. As this participation continues to grow, the EU intends to support and amplify the broader European presence, working closely with its Member States to offer EU@SXSW as a platform. Accordingly, the EU@SXSW website includes a 'More from Europe' page, listing further European activities at South by Southwest.
