The Delegation's focus extends well beyond government-to-government dealings and includes a large array of events from the policy-oriented, to cultural activities, to educational fora. Some are organized by the Delegation; others are hosted by EU Member States, think tanks, universities, and others. Please visit our separate events calendar at

Here, we present a broad oversight of events in the United States that are pertinent to the European Union. It’s a great opportunity to learn about Europe without leaving home!

EU Open House

Each year, on the Saturday closest to May 9, EU Member State embassies and the EU Delegation in Washington, D.C., open their doors to the public and showcase their finest, offering an insider’s view of the embassy, its culture, its people, its food, and more.

This popular month of diverse cultural events in the D.C. metro area encompasses activities from dance to theater to concerts, as well as art exhibits and lectures. Events in the D.C. area — mostly free of charge — take place at venues representing some of the capital’s most iconic settings for creative cultural expression, including the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the National Gallery of Art, and the U.S. Library of Congress.

Each year since 1987, the American Film Institute (AFI) and the EU Delegation have combined efforts to present the very best in contemporary European cinema. Typically scheduled over two to three weeks in December, the program features award-winning movies and box office hits prominently among the screenings. The 2020 edition was held entirely online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since 2007, this autumn festival presents some of Europe’s most talented children’s entertainers during two weeks of free activities throughout the D.C. metro area. Performances, concerts, workshops, movies, storytelling, puppetry, dance, magic, and cinema are featured thanks to the combined efforts of the 27 EU Member States, the EU Delegation, in collaboration with more than 30 cultural institutions in the Washington, DC area. The 2020 version was held completely online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Delegation ppresents at South by Southwest (SXSW) with its “EU@SXSW” venue – the go-to place for a European perspective on cutting-edge technologies, creative thinking, and innovation.

The 2021 edition of the festival will be entirely online. EU@SXSW offers panel discussions, film presentations, and technology demonstrations from across Europe and the United States.
