My visit to the Isle of Man - by EU Ambassador to the UK Pedro Serrano

"Tynwald day commemorates the oldest continuous serving parliament in the world. Today, in its XIth century of existence, it shows no sign of fatigue. I witnessed this personally thanks to the kind invitation received from its President to attend the 4th of July celebrations… on the 6th.
Tynwald remains at the centre of political life of the marvellously green Isle of Man: caring for its citizens, receiving their demands and tending to their expectations. Its “three chamber” system adds originality, and strengthens common understanding in advancing legislative processes.
I respectfully saluted the Fairies when crossing their bridge on my way to Douglas city. This contributed, no doubt, to a most enjoyable stay, including long walks on the beach, that lead me to a Spanish galleon moored side by side to a Royal Navy vessel. Tradition and modernity accompanied me well during these days.
The RAF provided ample music coverage. From the UK national anthem to that of the Isle of Man itself, straying occasionally into 007 territory. Manx youth brought graceful Gaelic dances to the Governor’s Garden Party.
Today the Isle of Man constitutes a closely knitted community, proud of its Viking past and open to the world. It is no wonder that many of its children follow the steps of Manx artists such as Archibald Knox. They travel afar in younger years and return afterwards to their wonderful island, a platform from which to continue contributing to the worlds beauty and prosperity.
I am deeply indebted to Laurence Skelly MLC, President of Tynwald, and his lovely wife Jackie Skelly, for their generosity and kindness to me during my stay. Always grateful to Chief Minister Alfred Cannan MHK, whom I have met in multiple occasions and who values deeply relations with the EU. Grateful, as well for his hospitality, to the Lieutenant Governor Sir John Gordon Lorimer KCB DSO MBE, or “H.E.”, as he is respectfully/familiarly called in the island.
I left the Isle of Man having, once again, saluted the bridge-fairies. As often, I am acutely aware of having only scratched the surface of deeper realities. But I am grateful to the many persons that extended their friendship and support to me during my stay and made it so rewarding,
Quocunque Jeceris Stabit - Whichever way you throw it, it will stand".
