Marking International Roma Day at Europe House

On 1 April, the EU Delegation to the UK hosted a panel discussion at Europe House to mark International Roma Day (celebrated on 8 April) and in connection with the Roma Week to be held in Brussels.

The event brought together Roma-led organisations, EU embassies, academics, and experts to discuss the challenges and opportunities for Roma communities in the EU and UK. The discussion focused on social justice, advocacy, and policy solutions to promote equality and inclusion for Roma people. Attendees highlighted the need for stronger cooperation between civil society, policymakers, and international organisations to address discrimination, access to education, employment, and healthcare.

The panel included Tereza Rostas, rights' campaigner, Mihai Calin Bica from the Roma Support group, Simona Lazar from Union Romani Voices and Margareth Greenfields from East Anglia University.

The EU’s commitment to Roma inclusion

The European Union is committed to advancing the rights and opportunities of Roma communities across Europe. The EU Roma Strategic Framework for Equality, Inclusion, and Participation 2020-2030 provides a roadmap for Member States to strengthen policies in key areas, including:

  • Fighting discrimination: addressing systemic barriers and promoting anti-racism policies.
  • Equal access to education and employment: supporting inclusive policies to ensure Roma children and adults can access quality education and job opportunities.
  • Improving housing and healthcare: encouraging Member States to tackle segregation and provide better access to healthcare services.
  • Roma participation in public life: enhancing political and civic engagement at all levels.

The European Commission is preparing an updated Roma Strategy, with a focus on monitoring progress, funding support, and stronger enforcement of anti-discrimination policies. The EU continues to work with Member States, civil society, and international organisations to build a more inclusive and equitable society for Roma communities.
