Happy Europe Day from London!

Within the framework of Europe Month 2025, featuring over 80 events across the whole of the UK on 7 May, the EU Delegation to the UK hosted in the heart of Westminster over 500 guests from across the political, diplomatic, and media communities for a vibrant day of unity, friendship, and cooperation.

EU Ambassador Pedro Serrano welcomed attendees and opened the reception by marking the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration. He reflected on the historic speech delivered on 9 May 1950 by then French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman - just five years after the end of World War II in Europe - emphasising its powerful call to replace confrontation with cooperation and to build lasting solidarity among European nations. This year’s celebration came at a pivotal moment for EU–UK relations. Ambassador Serrano noted the growing momentum toward renewed engagement, also in view of the UK–EU summit set to take place on 19 May. The Summit will mark the first such high-level meeting since the UK left the European Union. "A strong United Kingdom is good for the European Union, as a strong European Union is good for the United Kingdom", he said. Following his address, Ambassador Serrano was joined on stage by The Lord Mayor of the City of London, Alastair King, who also offered remarks to the audience.

Guests were treated to a stunning musical performance by the Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra (ymso), who played both the EU’s “Ode to Joy” and the British national anthem “God Save the King.” The programme continued with a graceful ballet performance by students of The Royal Ballet School, featuring selections from Coppélia and Les Patineurs, enchanting the audience with their artistry and elegance.

EU Deputy Ambassador Isabell Poppelbaum opened the session, which created a space to celebrate the contributions of EU nationals and reflect on the shared aspirations for the future of EU–UK relations. Among the guests and speakers was Deputy Mayor of London Debbie Weekes-Bernard, who delivered an inspiring address on the importance of diversity, community, and international friendship.
