"What role can energy play in bridging humanitarian-development divide?" an inter-agency seminar to illustrate energy needs and opportunities in developing countries, 18 January 2018
On 18 January 2018, the seminar: "What role can energy play in bridging humanitarian-development divide?" took place at FAO Headquarters in Rome. The event organised with Set4food initiative, funded by DG ECHO and FAO, illustrated energy needs in humanitarian contexts and related challenges in the field, including pertinent case studies.
Particularly striking is the evidence of 3 billion people lacking access to clean cooking and roughly 1 billion people without electricity. These figures include internally displaced people (IDPs) and refugees, who overwhelming rely on traditional solid fuels.
Several senior officers and experts shared their experiences and lessons learned. A big stress was put on the need for innovation in the sector, better coordination of energy efforts at global level, assessment of eco-system depletion and assistance to refugees and host communities combining short and longer term actions.
The EU Delegation intervened on the relevance of energy in the humanitarian response from a donor point of view.
