Zoom event during HLPF
COVID-19 has demonstrated that human, animal and environmental health are inextricably interconnected; what happens in one has knock-on impacts on the others. For example, human practices such as changes in land use and how food is produced are driving ecological and evolutionary conditions that facilitate disease spill-over events and contribute to antimicrobial resistance. More than half of known human infectious disease pathogens have an animal source or origin and result in over a billion cases globally each year, often imposing high financial and societal costs. Beyond COVID-19, the pollution of air, soil and water is having dramatic impacts on human, animal and plant health, with impacts also on food security and safety. WHO estimates that air pollution alone kills up to 7 million people yearly worldwide. Global experts have long called for a One Health approach: a health strategy that encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and communication on health at the human-animal-environmental interface. It has also sensitized us to the urgent need to consider the links between our health and the health of the environment around us when we design strategies for "building back better".
This side event will focus on a One Health approach to pollution, which represents a significant threat to community health, worldwide, and may affect animal health leading to emergence of new infectious agents, including how multi-sectoral risk assessments can comprehensively assess environmental health hazards, and represent a best buy toward implementation of the three dimensions of the 2030 Agenda.
