‘Women and Poverty’ was identified as the first area of concern of the Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA) in 1995. The strategic objectives in this area are based on the premise that women and girls continue to be more severely affected by poverty due to persisting structural and cultural causes putting them at a disadvantage. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed and exacerbated these challenges. According to an analysis commissioned by UN Women and UNDP, by 2021 around 435 million women and girls will be living on less than $1.90 a day — including 47 million pushed into poverty.

The BPfA calls for action to develop policies and programmes addressing the gender dimension of poverty. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development further recognised that the goal to end poverty in all its forms will not be achieved unless all women and girls are lifted out of poverty and able to exercise equal rights and opportunities.

The side event, co-hosted by China and the European Union, will assess progress and challenges in addressing the feminisation of poverty. The discussion will draw lessons learnt from experiences and best practices and will identify areas of further work to build back better, recover greener and deliver our common objectives by 2030.
