16 October 2025, New York – European Union Statement at the United Nations General Assembly 80th session  Third Committee Interactive Dialogue with the Chair-Rapporteur of the Working Group on the rights of peasants and other people working in rural areas, Mr. Carlos Duarte

Mr. Chair-Rapporteur,

I have the honor to speak on behalf of the European Union and its Member States.

FR. This report is particularly relevant as it sheds light on the central role of peasants and rural workers in global food systems and highlights the importance of their meaningful participation in decision-making processes that have an impact on their lives, environments and livelihoods.FR. In that sense, women’s participation to decision-making needs to be ensured

Rural areas are essential contributors to overall prosperity and economic strength, as well as to the green and digital transitions, as they assume a pivotal role in matters such as food production, environmental preservation, climate action and the fostering of cultural heritage. FR. Rural areas’ potential to localize and achieve the sustainable development goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda, should be underlined.

The EU's external action aims to promote the rights of rural workers by incorporating human rights principles into relevant policies. The EU funds initiatives to combat exploitative practices, address poverty, and improve livelihoods in rural areas, with a strong focus on ensuring decent working conditions and fundamental freedoms of rural workers worldwide.

Mr. Chair Rapporteur,

As we attach great importance to inclusive engagement, could you share best practices on national action plans adopted to implement the UN Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas, particularly those developed with the active participation of the people concerned?
