EU Explanation of Vote – UN General Assembly: adoption of the Resolution on Cooperation between the UN and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization
Thank you Mr. President,
I have the honour to deliver this explanation of vote on behalf of the following 26 Member states, including my own country, Denmark: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden.
I would like to emphasize that the EU and its Member States support cooperation between the United Nations and regional and other organizations, in accordance with Chapter VIII of the Charter of the United Nations, which is an important tool for the effective settlement of conflicts and the promotion of peace and security.
With this said, we wish to reiterate our concerns over parts of the newly introduced language in this text that fall outside the scope of UN cooperation with regional organizations.
Mr, President,
Despite engaging constructively in consultations and repeatedly raising objections with some of the new elements of this text, the draft resolution before us today does not reflect our concerns.
Against this background, we cannot vote in favour of this resolution and we invite all UN Member States to consider taking the same approach in this regard.
Thank you.
