The Universal Declaration of Human Rights & its two Covenants: the Indivisible Cornerstone of Human Rights

23.09.2020

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and of the opening of the 75th General Assembly, the European Union reaffirms our unwavering commitment to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which, together with the ICCPR and the ICESCR, form the indivisible cornerstone of all human rights and their universality, as reiterated at the World Conference on Human Rights in Vienna in 1993.

We  insist that everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in the Declaration, without distinction of any kind, and that all human rights are to be realized, whether they are civil and political rights, economic, social and cultural rights. There is no hierarchy among those rights, no subordination of one to the other.

We look forward to a constructive and fruitful 75th session of the General Assembly.
