The event was attended by number of high-level guests, such as the newly appointed Minister of Interior His Excellency Yassin Al-Yasiri, Iraqi officials, the Civilian Operations Commander Mr. Vincenzo Coppola, Ambassadors from the EU Member States and the Third State contributors to the Mission; Canada and Australia, representatives from the UN, NATO, Coalition and the Office of Security Cooperation-Iraq.
During the event the Minister handed over the ceremonial key to the Head of Mission of EUAM Iraq Dr. Markus Ritter.
The construction work of the JCC building started in October 2018 last year. The building will serve as a workspace for EUAM Iraq advisers working in the Ministry of Interior on a daily basis. It will also be used as a venue for workshops and other events for the Mission’s counterparts.
The building was offered to EUAM Iraq in May 2018 by the Senior Deputy Minister Dr. Aqeel. On 6 June 2018 an official agreement was signed by the two parties. EUAM Iraq is the only international organisation that is now embedded within the Iraqi Ministry of Interior and has been offered a building in the premises.
In their remarks, the speakers emphasised the key role the EU plays in Iraq especially in the civilian side of the security sector reform. Head of Mission Ritter thanked the Ministry of Interior for the generous support and willingness to cooperate also in the future.
Established in October 2017 EUAM Iraq has through expert advice and effective coordination established itself as a credible contributor to Iraq’s efforts to reform the country’s civilian security sector. The importance of the Mission’s work was underscored by the EU Member States' decision in October 2018 to not only extend its mandate but also double its staff to 98 persons.
