Today, many Belarusian families own at least one bicycle. However, for most people a bicycle is associated with rest, only a few people consider it as a full-fledged means of transport. At the same time, the number of cars in cities keeps on the rise. According to expert, it may lead to a traffic havoc in Minsk. The project is aimed at development of cycling to improve the ecology and economy in Belarusian cities.
Goals and objectives: Develop a sustainable cycling development plan and improve cycling infrastructure in Belarus. Provide incentives for urban residents to use bicycles as daily means of transportation.
Intermediate outcomes: The project provides for assessing the social and economic benefits of cycling development. The findings will inform the development of cycling infrastructure standards, and recommendations on urban cycling integration into the Belarusian public transportation system. In addition, there are plans to update the concept of cycling development in Minsk in the next five years.
The project provides for creation of a network of NGOs that promote cycling. The Minsk Cycling Community will open a full-time position of a cycling officer, who will coordinate the cooperation between activists and local authorities.
A number of cycling promotion activities: "Commuting by Bike", "Business Bike", et al. have been planned. Topical training events and public lectures for local authorities will be arranged.
