Reference. The day was established at the 63rd session of the UN General Assembly in 2009 and is celebrated on April 22, starting in 2010. The chairman of the 63rd session of the General Assembly, Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann, said that, by declaring the International Day, Member States recognized that the Earth and its ecosystems are our home: to promote harmony with nature and the planet to achieve a just balance among economic, social and environmental needs of the present and future generations of humanity.
