Statements on behalf of the EU

12 April 2019, New York – Statement on behalf of the European Union and its Member States, delivered by the Romanian Presidency of the European Union, at the informal UN Disarmament Commission session

Madame Chair,

I would like to say a few words on behalf of the EU and its Member States.

We express our disappointment for the fact that despite all your hard effort we haven't been able to start our planned deliberations.

We would like to express our strong support and respect to you and to your colleagues from the current and designated bureau.

The disarmament and non-proliferation machinery has a vital role to play to handle the many challenges to global security we are facing today. Those should be addressed through multilateralism. Therefore we need this Commission to come together and work constructively to improve transparency and build trust.

We would like to thank you, Madame Chair, for your non-paper with proposals on possible ways to proceed. However, we are of the view that the ideal solution is to immediately commence the work of this year's UNDC session.

Thank you
