Traineeships in Delegations

Are you a university student interested in international relations?  Is a working experience part of your course?  Are you curious to learn more about work of a diplomatic mission and how the EU Delegation represents EU interests and values in at the United Nations in New York?


What we offer?

A non funded traineeship of 3 months up to 6 months for students undertaking a compulsory traineeship as a part of their studies, starting in September 2019. (UPDATE)

Compulsory traineeships are available in the following policy areas:

•          Political (Security Council)

•          Press and information

•          Second Committee (Economic, trade and development)

•          Third Committee (Human rights)

•          Fifth Committee (UN budget and reform)

•          Sixth Committee (Legal)

•          Humanitarian

Depending on the policy area you will be assigned to, tasks may include :

  • Attending meetings organised at the United Nations, EU Delegation, EU Member States, UN Agencies, NGOs or think-tanks
  • Supporting the team in drafting reports , organising meetings, researching and analysing specific policy topics, analysing policy
  • Attending side events
  • Any other task which may be beneficiary to the trainee

with the aim to better understand the dynamics of the EU Delegation in the UN policy context, to raise awareness of the main policy and legal challenges in the UN context and to gain first-hand insight into decision making and negotiations processes


Placement, Working Environment and Conditions:

The placement of trainees will have to be approved by the university. Trainees will be under the direct supervision of a Traineeship Advisor at the EU Delegation.  Upon successful completion of the traineeship period, the EU Delegation will issue the trainee with a Certificate.


Selection Process:

The selection process will be conducted with the collaboration of local Universities or based on spontaneous applications. It will be merit-based and aimed at ensuring that all candidates are treated in a fair, transparent and non-discriminatory way.

Important information

Before applying you are requested to examine the dedicated website as well as the general eligibility criteria for a compulsory traineeships (Article 9 of the Decision ADMIN(2017)28 - Unpaid compulsory traineeships for students already residing and studying in the host country)

All costs related to travel inside the country of residence, visa, insurance, accommodation and living expenses must be borne by either the trainee or the University.

Applications from non-eligible candidates will not be considered. After the evaluation of all applications, shortlisted candidates will be contacted and invited for an interview. Unsuccessful candidates will be notified by email. In case the selected candidate is not able to present the required documents, his/her candidacy will be rejected.
