25/06/2018 - 00:00
Agriculture and Food Safety

The overall objective of the improvement of key services to agriculture is to help cushion the economic and social impact of the sugar sector restructuring by supporting a diversified market-driven agriculture sector. The project purpose (specific objective) is that key services to agriculture are improved and enhanced.

The programme is designed to alleviate poverty for the most vulnerable groups in sugar dependent areas focusing on the provision of direct support to farmers to diversify into the production of horticultural crops, and through the provision of indirect support to farmers by supporting sugar cane research and extension.A reduction in poverty levels among target groups will be achieved by enabling the poor to realize new opportunities in horticultural and sugar markets, facilitated by the strengthening of farmers' associations, development of private sector partnerships and improving access to agricultural inputs and extension.

In the framework of the programme, the two main following results are expected to be achieved by SPC:
  • Horticulture/food crops value chains are supported and supply capacities are enhanced;
  • Fair trade associations are replicated and operations strengthened.
