7 March 2018, New York – The United Nations and the European Union’s Spotlight Initiative to eliminate violence against women and girls will host a special event at UN Headquarters on Monday, 12 March. Coinciding with the opening of the Commission on the Status of Women’s (CSW) 62nd Session, the question of intersectionality and of the Spotlight Initiative reaching specific groups of women and girls who face multiple forms of discrimination will be the central focus of this side event. This year’s CSW will highlight the challenges and opportunities in achieving gender equality and the empowerment of rural women and girls.

In September 2017, the United Nations and the European Union launched the Spotlight Initiative – a new, global effort focused on eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls. The initiative will deploy targeted, large-scale investments in Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Pacific and the Caribbean, aimed at achieving significant improvements in the lives of women and girls.

The Spotlight Initiative is currently supported by the EU's contribution of EUR 500 million, while other donors and partners have been invited to join. The effort is being administered by the UN’s Multi-Partner Trust Fund Office, with the support of the UN Development Programme, UN Population Fund and UN Women, and overseen by the Executive Office of the UN Secretary-General.
