These schemes may request fees and/or personal details from the recipients. Fees or payments are never required by the EU for its internship, employment or grant opportunities. Any scheme requesting money is fraudulent.

EMPLOYMENT

The Delegation of the European Union to the United Nations in New York currently has no job openings. When available, openings are posted here: www.jobs.net/jobs/enuneuropa.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS for EU Delegations have been revised (6 March 2018) 

The European Union has a long tradition of offering traineeship opportunities in EU Delegations around the world. In New York the program offers trainees the opportunity to follow the various activities of the EU Delegation in UN bodies, such as the Security Council, the General Assembly and its various committees, the Economic and Social Council and its subsidiary bodies and the Peacebuilding Commission.

In close consultation with the candidate and the academic institution, a suitable portfolio will be identified within one of the following teams:

(1) Political Affairs and Security Council

(2) Human Rights and Social Affairs

(3) Humanitarian Affairs

(4) Economic and Trade / International Cooperation and Development

(5) Coordination, Press & Public Diplomacy

(6) UN Budget & Administration

(7) Legal and Institutional Affairs, Counter-terrorism and Sanctions

 

A- What will you do?

As trainees you will:

  • Gain a better understanding of the work of the EU Institutions, the EU Delegation and the United Nations;
  • Learn more about the relationship between the EU and the UN, and the intergovernmental decision-making process in a multilateral context;
  • Attend EU coordination meetings with the EU Member States;
  • Attend formal and informal meetings at the United Nations;
  • Draft reports to EU Headquarters and EU Member States, background research, drafting speaking points etc;
  • Participate and organize EU side-events in the UN-context;
  • Assist high-level EU officials on mission to NYC.

B- What traineeship types do we offer and who can apply

1. Paid traineeship for young graduates with less than one year of professional experience:

  • citizens of the host country, nationals from the EU Member States or pre-accession States
  • young graduates with at least a Bachelor Diploma (or equivalent)
  • maximum one year of professional experience
  • no previous experience of more than six weeks in the EU Institutions

2. Unpaid compulsory traineeship for students already residing and studying in the host country:

  • citizens of the host country, nationals from EU Member States or pre-accession States
  • students enrolled in the 3rd ,4th or 5th University year
  • undertaking a compulsory traineeship within the framework of their studies
  • already residing in the host country
  • no professional experience
  • no previous experience of more than six weeks in the EU Institutions

3. Traineeship for students of national administration schools of EU Member States:

  • nationals from EU Member States
  • students/civil servants
  • receiving an adequate financing from the sending national school

4. Traineeship for trainee civil servants of an administration in an EU Member State as part of their compulsory professional training:

  • nationals from EU Member States
  • status of trainee civil servant
  • remunerated by the national administration concerned

C- General conditions

  • A trainee will be attached to one of the above listed section of the EU Delegation and placed under the responsibility of a traineeship adviser (normally the Head of Section)
  • Duration: the traineeship can be up to a maximum of six months
  • Languages: In order for the trainee to fully benefit from the traineeship and to be able to follow meetings and perform adequately, candidates must possess excellent English language knowledge.
  • Previous experience in the EU Institutions: Please note that applications will not be accepted from candidates who have already benefited from any kind of training (paid or unpaid) or employment for more than 6 weeks within an EU institution, body, agency or office.
  • Monthly grant: selected trainees under the paid internship program will receive a monthly grant of 1200€
  • Visa: the Delegation will provide invitation letters for visa applications however, trainees are responsible for obtaining the necessary visa
  • Travel: trainees have to arrange and finance their travel to the EU Delegation
  • Accommodation: the trainee will have to cover the accommodation costs

D- Requirements to apply

The duration of the internship program is between a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 6 months. Two internship periods are pre-defined which start on 1 January until 30 June and from 1 July until 31 December of a given year.

The deadlines for submitting applications are 27 August for the first half year internship and 15 March for the second half year internship period. 

 

Please send your detailed curriculum vitae (CV) accompanied by recommendation letters from a professor/employer and a motivational letter indicating the preferred lengths of the internship to the internship coordinator of the EU Delegation at: delegation-new-york-intern@eeas.europa.eu

 

The EU Delegation will manage the selection procedure which is based on the candidate's qualifications and skills. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. Pre-selected candidate must provide the following documents

 

  • Passport/ID card
  • Copy of the diploma (young graduates) or University letter requesting a compulsory traineeship (for students); Students under a F1 visa would be required to provide a letter from their university stating that the internship must fulfil the educational objectives of the current degree program, along with a copy of the I-20 form
  • Proof of health insurance coverage and in case the trainee is coming from another country proof of a repatriation insurance for the entire traineeship period
  • Language certificates
  • Extract from the "judicial record"
  • Proof of financing (if financed by other institution)

In case the selected candidate is not able to present all required documents, his/her candidacy will be rejected.

E- Working conditions

Trainees shall comply with internal rules and instructions given by the traineeship adviser. In order to benefit from a real immersion into a professional environment, trainees will follow the same working hours as the rest of the staff of the EU Delegation.  A trainee shall be entitled to two days of leave per month.

F- End of traineeship

At the end of their traineeship period, trainees should complete a report detailing the work that they have carried out during their traineeship and their assessment of their experience. An evaluation report shall also be drawn up by the Traineeship Adviser. The EU Delegation will issue the trainee with a Certificate specifying the length of the traineeship and the receiving section of the EU Delegation.
